Technology of building houses from CLT panels
CLT technology is actively developing in Ukraine, offering new opportunities for the construction of residential and commercial properties. Given current trends in architecture and the desire for sustainable development, CLT panels are becoming one of the key materials of the future in the construction industry. Their use allows architects and engineers to implement bold and innovative projects, combining functionality, aesthetics and resistance to external influences.
What are CLT panels
CLT panels, or cross-laminated timber panels, are an innovative building material obtained by gluing several layers of wooden boards in perpendicular directions. This gives the material high strength and stability.
CLT panels can withstand significant loads, which makes them ideal for use as structural elements in construction. Panels can be made from various types of wood, usually pine, processed to a smooth sanded surface.
Panels can have a different number of layers, usually from three to nine, and are produced in lengths of up to 18 meters and widths of up to 3.5 meters, depending on the manufacturer. The thickness of the panels varies, which allows them to be adapted to specific project requirements.
Advantages of CLT panels
Cross-laminated timber panels combine the best qualities of traditional building materials:
- They have excellent thermal insulation properties and the ability to create a comfortable microclimate in rooms, as they “breathe”, regulating humidity.
- They demonstrate good sound insulation and seismic resistance, which makes CLT panels suitable for use in regions with high seismic activity (the house can “survive” seismic tremors of 7-8 points).
- Due to their fire resistance, CLT panels slow down the spread of fire (burning rate – no more than 0.8 mm per minute), which is an important safety factor.
- They have excellent load-bearing capacity, which makes it possible to erect buildings up to 10 meters high without the use of other materials.
- Eco-friendly compared to traditional building materials – the adhesive used in CLT panels does not contain formaldehyde
- Houses made of CLT panels do not require a powerful foundation due to the light weight of multi-layer wood panels.
- Building houses from CLT panels is faster because most of the work is done in the factory rather than on the construction site. This reduces construction time.
CLT panels are a durable, sustainable and environmentally friendly building material that offers many advantages for modern construction. The unique characteristics of the material make it an ideal choice for creating buildings and structures that are not only strong and reliable, but also contribute to the creation of a healthy and comfortable living environment.
Stages of construction of houses from CLT panels
Conventionally, all construction work can be divided into several stages:
- Careful preparation of the foundation on which the CLT panels will be installed.
- After installing the wall panels, they are waterproofed and damped, which prevents possible moisture problems and improves sound insulation.
- Then comes the installation of CLT floor slabs, which also form the load-bearing frame of the building.
- After the main structure is assembled, windows and doors are installed.
- Then the roof is installed, followed by finishing work, including external and internal finishing.
CLT panels are resistant to shrinkage, which allows finishing work to begin immediately after construction.
